The barracks and other buildings at the former Hunters Point Naval Shipyard have been used for artists’ studios for many years. Now the area is being developed for housing. The crumbling barracks are going to be torn down, tons of toxic material is being cleaned up. A new building will be built for the artists. I hope it’s big enough for all 250 of them. A couple of times a year they open the studios to the public. Here are photographs of some of the artists.This fellow does mind-blowing digital collages. You look at them and your brain can hardly process them.Very painterly-looking guy, playing chess with his son, who I later realized is also a painter.This woman makes tremendous animal masks, among other things.This gentleman makes very colorful three dimensional pieces, which require some drilling and screwing together.This fellow’s work has a cartoonish quality. He is a Burning Man participant, and told of a structure that took weeks to build, and minutes to burn.
