In the Presidio: Andy Goldsworthy’s ‘Spire’

High on a hill in the Presidio, Andy Goldsworthy installed a 100 foot tall work called ‘Spire’.

It consists of 37 Cypress trunks, with steel reinforcement that you can’t see.

It has a base of reinforced concrete, around a metal sleeve. Years ago Goldsworthy did a similar work in Britain, though not so well constructed. As it aged, it threatened to fall on passers by, and was taken down.

Many trees have been planted around the site, with the idea that in several years, they will conceal the sculpture. This work was financed by a British art collector, to whom we should extend a hearty thank you.
