Protest in East Palo Alto

University Circle is a massive development that sits on the site formerly known as Whiskey Gulch. Liquor sales were prohibited within a mile of Stanford University, and Whisky Gulch was exactly a mile away, so many liquor stores and bars sprouted there. Or so the story goes.

Today University Circle has a Four Seasons hotel, and many high-end offices. One of the office tenants has is in a dispute with a construction union, so the union mounted a colorful protest.

Cassidy Turley is a huge commercial real estate firm. They contract with South Bay Construction, which hires non-union subcontractors.

The one fellow manning this protest wears a safety vest, like a good union fellow.

The fine print on the bottom of this banner reads:”We do not seek recognition, nor are we asking anyone to stop working,  stop deliveries, or cease doing business with any employer”.

A firm this big can afford to hire union guys, and pay their high wages and benefits. So they should, in my opinion. But they are following the trend of eliminating the middle class.

Kudos to the union’s art director.

    Why?

Why not pay the market rate rather than than a union-demanded inflated rate?

    • I wish I had a union job. I wish everybody had a good-paying job with benefits. Right now market rate is low, due to a lot of people looking for work.
