Great Building for Great Cause

In Parnassus Heights, on the side of Mount Sutro, is a wonderful building that has  many names. The UCSF Stem Cell Research Center, The Ray and Dagmar Dolby Regeneration Medicine Building, The Eli and Edythe Broad Center of Regeneration Medicine and Stem Cell Research are among them. It was made possible by a ballot measure passed by California voters, and some generous, fabulously well-to-do donors.

Built on a little slip of land, on a sixty degree slope, a site no doubt previously thought to be unbuildable. Difficult to photograph unless one has a little helicopter.

Lovely curves. We looked in the window and saw a gentleman in a white lab coat.

Underneath, you can see it’s quite a piece of engineering.

Here’s a shock absorber and another thing that makes the building safe in earthquakes.

You can read more about the building and see professional photographs of it here.
