The Jack Tar Hotel opened in 1960, at the corner of Van Ness and Geary in San Francisco. It was modern and swank, and provided formidable competition to the staid hotels of Union Square. Sinatra sang there, Coppola’s ‘The Conversation’ was filmed there. In 1982 it was renamed the Cathedral Hill Hotel. (This photo was jacked from SFgate.)
Fast forward to 2009: the hotel was sold to California Pacific Medical Corporation, for a new hospital. A long and complicated battle ensued, with frightening artist’s renderings, community protests, leaked documents, lots of intrigue. Finally an agreement was reached, now demotion has begun.
This is a huge demo job, that will go on for months. Then major new construction- this area will be messed up for a couple of years at least.
